ASA 114 Cruising Catamaran

ASA 114 Cruising Catamaran

ASA 114 Cruising Catamaran

ASA Class Description
Learn to skipper an auxiliary-powered sailing cruising catamaran of approximately 30 to 45 feet in length during a multi-day liveaboard cruise upon inland or coastal waters in moderate to heavy winds (up to 30 knots) and sea conditions. Knowledge of catamaran structure, components and features, performance under sail and power, boat systems, seamanship and safety, heavy weather operation, and emergency response.
Prerequisites
ASA 104 Bareboat Cruising (may be taken on the same liveaboard 7 - 10 day trip)
ASA Recommendations
ASA recommends a minimum of 80 on-water sailing hours before undertaking ASA 104 and ASA 114. While many schools and instructors don't require this, we do. Our students must have at least 15 qualifying days on their sailing resume including the days they accumulate during their ASA 101, 103, and 104 classes with us as a prerequisite.
Class Duration
You should plan to spend 8 - 10 hours studying the materials and 1 - 2 hours for the written exam. On the water training sessions taught during our liveaboard 7 - 10 day adventure learning vacations. You may opt to complete the written exam prior to departure or during the trip.
OS Sailing Pathways Curriculum
ASA 114 is an advanced sailing class in Level III of the OS Sailing Pathways. Once you complete the knowledge / theory materials, written exam, and the required on the water training, we sign your logbook, and you receive the ASA 114 certification.
We require Level III students to complete a total of an additional 35 hours of on the water practice as skipper or crew before they can depart for their adventure learning vacation for ASA 106 training. This can be through our community sail events, bareboat time on our boats, sailing with friends, other alumni, or your local yacht club on any sized vessel.
ASA 104 may be taken at the same time as ASA 114 on a single trip but that trip must be aboard a catamaran. This is because the ASA 114 curriculum is specific to a catamaran and the ASA 104 curriculum is more general to bareboat cruising.
Not Included In ASA Standard That We Teach
All of our advanced sailing classes, ASA 104, ASA 114, and ASA 106, are taught on liveaboard 7 - 10 day adventure learning vacations. These immersive experiences enable our students to learn continuously throughout the trip. As the saying goes, you can read about things, but you won't truly understand them until you do them.
