ASA Class Description
Learn to safely act as skipper and crew of a sailing vessel about 30 to 50 feet in length in coastal and inland waters, in any conditions.
Prerequisites
ASA Recommendations
ASA does not have any recommended minimum on-water sailing hours before undertaking ASA 106. We believe this is a mistake.
Our students must have at least 31 qualifying days on their
sailing resume including the days they accumulate during their
ASA 101,
103,
104, and
114 classes with us as a prerequisite.
We strongly recommend that students have completed
ASA 114 before taking ASA 106 as understanding the differences and challenges unique to catamarans is just good seamanship.
Class Duration
You should plan to spend 60 - 80 hours studying the materials and 2 - 3 hours for the written exam. On the water training sessions taught during our liveaboard 7 - 10 day adventure learning vacations. You must complete the written exam (fill in the blank) during the trip.
OS Sailing Pathways Curriculum
ASA 106 is an advanced sailing class in Level IV of the
OS Sailing Pathways. This is a serious class and requires a lot of prep work and demonstration of advanced seamanship skills, knowledge, thinking, and wisdom. Once you complete the knowledge / theory materials, written exam, and the required on the water training, we sign your logbook, and you receive the ASA 106 certification.
We do not require Level IV students to complete additional hours of on the water practice as we do not allow students to combine this class with any other. We expect 106 students to help lead Level III students completing
ASA 104 /
114 classes on the trip. By the end of the trip students will have accumulated the required additional hours to move onto Level V in the
OS Sailing Pathways curriculum.
Not Included In ASA Standard That We Teach
All of our advanced sailing classes,
ASA 104,
ASA 114, and
ASA 106, are taught on liveaboard 7 - 10 day adventure learning vacations. These immersive experiences enable our students to learn continuously throughout the trip. As the saying goes, you can read about things, but you won't truly understand them until you do them.
